Pilates Method Classes

The Pilates Method, developed by the legendary physical trainer Joseph Pilates, is an extensive physical conditioning system.

Emphasizing body alignment and correct breathing, Pilates uses abdomen, lower back and buttocks as a power center, enabling the rest of the body to move freely.

Born In Germany in 1880, Joseph H. Pilates had a lifelong interest in body conditioning. As a frail child, Joseph Pilates sought ways to develop his strength and stamina, eventually he grew to become an accomplished skier, diver, gymnast and boxer. In 1926, Joseph immigrated to the United States with his exercise method, which has grown in sophistication and popularity until today.

Pilates Method is very instrumental in development of correct body alignment, proper posture, flexibility, balance and coordination as well as muscular endurance and muscular strength.

The Pilates Method of body conditioning promotes physical harmony and balance for people of all ages and physical levels. The training is done either on a one-to-one basis or in small groups, therefore it takes into consideration one’s limitations and is highly personalized.

Not surprisingly, some of the first people to use The Method were dancers such as Martha Graham and George Balanchine. Currently The Pilates method is used by dance companies throughout the world, as well as by professional and recreational athletes.

Recently discovered by physical therapists, chiropractors and orthopedist, The Method is being integrated into rehabilitative regimes, designed to enhance recovery of soft tissue injuries. Used in conjunction with cardiovascular conditioning and weight training it provides for an extremely effective and well-rounded training system. Joseph Pilates told his students: “You will feel better in 10 sessions, look better in 20 sessions, and have a completely new body in 30 sessions.”

Regardless of your current level of fitness -- from sedentary office worker to fitness enthusiast -- the Pilates® Method can be your primary mode of body conditioning and injury prevention.

Recently discovered by physical therapists, chiropractors and orthopedists, the Pilates Method of body conditioning has been integrated into rehabilitative exercise and physical therapy programs designed to speed recovery of soft tissue injuries. The method can also be used by pregnant women to learn proper breathing and body alignment, improve concentration, and recover body shape and tone after pregnancy. Various pieces of apparatus are used in the Pilates Method. Joseph H. Pilates designed more than 500 specific exercises using five major pieces of unique apparatus to develop the body uniformly.

In addition to general physical conditioning, Pilates Method is extremely effective in rehabilitation of various orthopedic injuries. Many local physicians refer their patients to Physical Intelligence, Inc. We work with doctors and physical therapists to monitor progress and determine how to best meet their patient’s needs.
